Maze Craze
Some people believe that when you find yourself in the Albitrunca underground maze for too long, you will develop a condition playfully dubbed as Maze Craze by many, yet not widely acknowledged in the organization. W.I.L.L.O.W.I.S.P. employees have coined the term due to the fact that the place is a large maze. The Algenates are known to be advised to take extended breaks from their shift and not to work for too many consecutive days at a time.
People believe that some of the cause for Maze Craze is the fact that one is underground for long periods of time and not exposed to proper sunlight. Ones body begins to get confused and lose track of when it is day or night on the surface. They also believe that being confined in a small, inclosed space for such a long time may cause disruption. The Lightbeams in Albitrunca are also said to have lasting effects on people and the way they behave.
It is not only guards but prisoners who are thought to experience Maze Craze. Sometimes, it is rumored that Algenates become so Maze Crazy that they get lost in the underground maze never to be seen again. The symptoms of this condition may also include difference in behavior after an employee is relieved from their duties in the compound. Some employees have noticed that people returning from working on the Albitrunca project do so looking or acting slightly different than they did before being assigned. This is also rumored to be true of prisoners kept there, though it has not been confirmed that prisoners are kept there.
Other Maze Craze symptoms include acting strange, quiet, and distant while within the maze, as ones brain is longing to exit the place. Some people are known to have manic episodes, begging to get out of the maze, while others retreat to staying within the dark corners of the maze as if they believe it is their new home and they would never want to leave. This is thought to be an effect of Maze Craze because it is not common for a person to want to say in the dark, ominous underground maze.
It is also believed that some Androids and HTPMDs can experience Maze Craze. This cannot fully be confirmed as Android activity is not widely acknowledged in the organization.
Transmission & Vectors
The Maze Craze is not contageous. It cannot be spread by contact. One may only contract this condition by experiencing Albitrunca firsthand.
Treatment
There is no set way to completely cure Maze Craze, but it is advised that one affected by the condition stay out of the maze until symptoms subside. They are told to to an open area out in the public, breathe fresh air, stay out of confined spaces, relax, and push everything about Albitrunca out of their mind. Meditation, book reading, healthy eating, and Chapel are also suggested remedies.
Commander McCox gives newbies the rundown: Maze Craze. I hear talk about it around. I'm glad I've never experienced it firsthand. They way they speak on it, I'd say it's scary stuff. It's bad enough that adult operatives and employees have to deal with that, but those Junior Sprouts who do their Final Assignments there? No wonder they're scared and stressing out so much. But you don't have to stress out. It's fine. You know, if you ever have to go into Albitrunca, just remember to focus on the task at hand. You'll be out of there in no time. I hear Maze Craze only kicks in when you have been underground for hours, even days at a time. I couldn't do that. Unless, maybe, they had, like, a mini golf course down there or something. But I'd still want to be able to come out and see the sun once in a while.
I absolutely loved your take on 'Maze Craze'! The way you’ve described the condition makes it feel so real and haunting, and I found myself intrigued by the interplay of environmental, psychological, and possibly otherworldly factors. The mention of symptoms like the manic episodes or people retreating into the maze gave me chills.
